CHANDIGARH, INDIA — The Indian government has decided to set up six additional plastic parks, as part of the country's five-year plan that runs from 2012-2017.
The government is already building four plastic parks, in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Assam. Work on those industrial parks is progressing, and they are scheduled to be finished in a year or two. The six new parks will be in addition to them.
Neelkamal Darbari, joint secretary for petrochemicals, discussed the plan at a seminar on the potential for the plastic industry in northern India. The government identified six states for establishing plastic parks: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
The plastic park scheme envisages clusters of plastic industry operations including small- and medium-sized enterprises and recycling operations.
Darbari pointed out that use of plastics in agriculture has helped farmers increase crop production, food quality and efficient usage of water resources.
